5 Great Things You Can Do in The Islip Area….

If You Didn’t Have

Back Pain

As I’m writing this, it is the first week of August and I am sitting here wondering where the summer has gone. In the blink of an eye, summer seems to be wrapping up. Summer here on Long Island is just never long enough! I personally, am not ready to let it go so I am going to make the most out of whatever summer and nice weather we have left.
I believe we are extremely lucky to be living in the Islip area on Long Island. Some of the summer time activities we have available to us make the high taxes worth it! My wife, puppy and I love to go out and stay as active as we can. We are fortunate to have so many fun outdoor activities in our very own backyard.
Most of the things that I included on this list require the ability to perform some sort of physical activity. It’s nothing too strenuous, but I hope that if you are interested in any of these activities like we are, your back is healthy enough to tolerate it. I truly hope you are able to enjoy some of these activities before the cold weather comes in, and if you are limited by any back pain – you do something about it to get it fixed so that you can get back to being active!
So, before I bore you to death with my reasons for writing this, let’s dive in to some of our favorite activities:

1. Paddle boarding! I got in to paddle boarding several years back when a good friend and fellow trainer/coworker started one of Long Island’s first paddle boarding businesses, Get Up Stand Up. Meg Shannon put together a great a great model which includes paddle boarding lessons, with multiple options of boards (from bigger easier boards, to more challenging smaller boards). She combines half the session with personal training on the beach, with expert training. It is always a blast going out there. Not only does she have her standards sessions, but she also performs special sessions such as midnight paddles, or community clean up paddle events. Not only is it fun to be out on the water, it is also a great workout as well. Meg does such a great job and I promise you will not be disappointed with her service if you try paddle boarding with GUSU!

2. This article wouldn’t be complete writing about things to do in Islip if I didn’t talk about Fire Island. Either by taking the ferry or hopping over on a boat with friends and family, we try to get over there as often as possible. There is so much to do and it is one of my family’s favorite places to go on Earth! From walking and exploring all the shops at the town of Ocean beach, to hanging on the beach at the quieter and more relaxing (for the most part) environment of Kismet, we are never disappointed in our time over there.
3. The Fire Island Lighthouse – If you have not already done so, try to go to the lighthouse and walk to the top. It is a great and scenic experience. Although it’s been quite some time since I have walked the actual stairs of the lighthouse, we frequently go for family walks with our dog from Robert Moses beach over to the lighthouse. It is always a beautiful walk and our dog seems to love it too!

4. We are fortunate to have several golf courses in our area that are easy to access and we can get too quickly. There are few things better than being out on a nice day and playing a round of golf with friends and family. Having access to local courses such as Bergen Point, Timber Point, or Brentwood Country Club make getting out on a whim easy to do. If you suffer from back pain and have not been able to golf this summer at these courses, there are things you can do to address the issue and get out there to enjoy a round before the cold weather comes!

5. Heckscher State Park Bike Trails – My wife and I have recently just started getting into bike riding. It has become our Sunday routine. Going for rides in one of our local state parks such as Hecksher State Park is great exercise and also enjoyable. Sometimes, we’ll even ride our bikes just to get our morning coffee in a neighboring town to start the day off with a little healthy sweat.

This is just a brief overview of some things that my family and I love to do, especially when we are trying to stay active. We believe that these are some of the perks of living on Long Island in our area. It is my hope that you are also able to enjoy some of these outdoor experiences, so you can continue doing the things you love to do.
Don’t let back pain stop you from being active and enjoying the rest of the summer. Stay tuned for more information about health tips or protecting your back in the weeks to come.
